Abhorrence was a Finnish death metal band.

History

A few friends had several speed/thrash metal bands and after getting into death metal, they decided to start a new band. Guitarist Tomi Koivusaari left Violent Solution to do so, and the other guitarist Kalle Mattsson, along with vocalist Jukka Kolehmainen and bassist Jussi Ahlroth, had a band called "Disaster", while drummer Kimmo Heikkinen had just bought drums.

The band was formed in early 1989, playing some time under several different names until settling on Abhorrence. They played dozens of concerts alongside bands like Xysma, Funebre and Disgrace. After recording and releasing one demo tape, titled "Vulgar Necrolatry", they received a suggestion to do a 7" EP. The 7" EP was released by Seraphic Decay Records (later found out to be a rip-off label), which was managed by Steve O'Bannon. Without a written contract of any kind, the band lost all of the master tapes and possible future revenues.

After several more gigs around Finland, a short visit to Norway (one gig and a party/sleepover at black metal band Mayhem's house) with their second drummer Mika Arnkil (who was on leave from Antidote), the band broke up in 1990.

Shortly after this, Relapse Records contacted the band for a recording contract, which eventually helped Amorphis get in touch with the label.
