The book deals with the adventures of Colin Dobson, "CD", living in a near-future world in which the environmental damage Mankind is causing to the Earth is apparently reaching critical levels. CD and his friend Rachel become embroiled in the titular Stark conspiracy; a cabal of Earth's richest and most influential men who have long been aware that the planet's entire ecosystem is approaching total collapse. Seeking to save their own lives, they secretly created a fleet of spacecraft with the intention of founding a colony on the Moon.
Elton adapted this into a screenplay for TV in 1993, where he played CD.
Literary significance & criticism
The novel is largely a satire of business, government and social attitudes toward the environment in the late 1980s. It describes a world in which big business is completely uncaring and environmental protestors are largely foolish and unrealistic to the point of absurdity. Fact|date=February 2007
