France at the Olympics

France at the Olympics

France has competed at every celebration of the modern Olympic Games, although the participation at the 1904 Games is questionable, with Albert Coray's appearance being credited by different sources to either the United States or France.

France has hosted the Games on five occasions:
*1900 Summer Olympics in Paris
*1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix
*1924 Summer Olympics in Paris
*1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble
*1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville

French athletes have won a total of 596 medals at the Summer Olympic Games, with fencing and cycling as the top medal-producing sports. France has won an additional 83 medals at the Winter Olympic Games, mostly in alpine skiing.

The National Olympic Committee for France was created and recognized in 1894.
