Freshly graduated and commissioned Lt. Rip Foster is tasked with retrieving an
asteroid made of purethorium from theasteroid belt and bringing it to Earth for use asfissionable material. But thetotalitarian Connies have their own plans for the asteroid.Political allegory
The villains in "Rip Foster" are known as "The Consops." This is short for "Consolidated Peoples' Governments"- that the Planeteers of "The Federation of Free Governments" use. It is easy to see that "the Connies" is allegory for "the
Commies ", a term forCommunists . The book reflects the times - it was written during theCold War and theKorean War . The story emphasizes action and adventure, but hints at ageo-political situation not unlike that of the early 1950s.List of editions
