Structureless particle

Structureless particle

A structureless particle is an ideal particle which does not have any internal degrees of freedom. The terminology is used in statistical thermodynamics to refer to either a boson or fermion, often in the context of deriving the partition function for an ensemble of stuctureless particles.

Examples of structureless particles in this context include photons (a boson) and electrons (a fermion).
