- John Gladwin
John Warren Gladwin is the
Bishop of Chelmsford in theChurch of England . He stands in theopen evangelical tradition.Born in 1942, he was educated at
Hertford Grammar School andChurchill College ,Cambridge (BA 1965, MA 1968). His ministerial training was atCranmer Hall ,Durham (Diploma in Theology 1969). He was ordained deacon in 1967, priest in 1968, and bishop in 1994. He married Lydia Elizabeth Adam in 1981.Born in
Hertford , he wasBishop of Guildford from 1994 – 2004, when he was appointed to beBishop of Chelmsford . He has been a member of theHouse of Lords since 1999.Christian engagement with public affairs has been a constant theme throughout his ministry, and for six years was Director of theShaftesbury Project onChristian Involvement in Society, before becoming Secretary of theChurch of England ’s Board for Social Responsibility. He was Chair of theMinistry Division of theChurch of England until 2006.His work with
Christian Aid has taken him around the world, where he has seen at first hand the tireless work of manyChristians who are committed to working alongside the world’s most needy people.
