In the "Dungeons & Dragons" roleplaying game, bullywugs are a violent race of frog-like humanoids. They first appeared in the 1st Edition "Fiend Folio" [cite book| last =Turnbull| first =Don| title ="Fiend Folio"| publisher =TSR| date =1981| pages =128| isbn =0-935696-21-0 ] and have since gone on to appear in other editions [cite book| last =Stewart| first =Doug| title ="Monstrous Manual"| publisher =TSR| date =1994| pages =384| isbn =1-56076-619 ] of the Dungeons & Dragons game and cartoon.

Bullywug is presented as a playable character race in "The Complete Book of Humanoids" (1993), [Slavicsek, Bill. "The Complete Book of Humanoids" (TSR, 1993)] and is later presented as a playable character race again in "Player's Option: Skills & Powers" (1995).

Ecology

Environment

Bullywugs inhabit temperate to tropical swamps.

Typical physical charactaristics

Bullywugs are described as humanoids with the head of frogs. They are usually shorter than a human, with leathery skin and webbed digits. They are very good jumpers, and can jump roughly 30 feet forward and 15 feet vertically.

ociety

Bullywugs live in primitive groups, hunting and fishing together. The hierarchy is based on strength, with the strongest being the leaders. Women and children are considered to be the lowest, no matter what. Bullywugs are very territorial, and mostly will attack anyone who trespasses. Oddly enough, they tend not to fight within the tribe, but rival bullywug tribes will fight with each other.

Bullywugs are known to revere a god named Ramenos, but this deity seems to be more concerned with sleeping than with the welfare of his race.

Bullywugs in "Greyhawk"

In the "World of Greyhawk" campaign setting, bullywugs are known to exist in the Hool Marshes, the Mistmarsh, and the Vast Swamp. A number of bullywug tribes have forsaken the worship of Ramenos for Wastri.

Bullywugs in Other Media

Bullywugs were often featured as a common antagonist to the main characters in the "Dungeons & Dragons" animated series. [cite video| title = [http://imdb.com/title/tt0085011/ Dungeons & Dragons] | medium =TV-Series| publisher =Marvel Productions| location =USA| date =1983]

Derivations

Bullywugs were the primary inspiration for the froglok race in the MMORPG "EverQuest",Fact|date=February 2007 although froglok society is structured much differently.
