WT05 (Toledo's CW) is the flagship television station of Block Communications, which also owns the Toledo Blade and Buckeye CableSystem. It is the CW's Northwest Ohio affiliate.

Originally an exclusive to Buckeye CableSystem viewers, it had since been expanded to other cable systems in northwestern Ohio, such as Time Warner Cable and Comcast. WT05 does not have an over-air broadcast signal.

History

WT05 was formed in the late 1980s when WUPW became the Fox affiliate for Northwest Ohio. The original name was "TV5," short for "Toledo Vision 5," without a set of call letters. The network was created to fill the full power-independent television void for the entire NW Ohio market, after WNGT 48 (formerly W48AP) became UPN, then My Network TV. The station joined the WB as a charter affiliate in 1995.

Over the years the station has carried Toledo area sports, including Toledo Mud Hens baseball and University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University football and basketball, to the point that Buckeye Cablesystem launched a regional all-sports network, BCSN ("Buckeye Cable Sports Network") on January 7, 2004.

In September 2006, WT05 became a CW affiliate, from being .

Other "channel 5's" have neen in the market, but WTO5 wasn't "The Box" or "religious programming" on channel 5, nor was on the air. It should not be confused with those other ones (WBTL 5 and WLMB 5-1).
