The station first signed on in
1976 as WKZY-FM, playingbeautiful music and then evolving into anadult contemporary format as "Z97". In 1982, the call letters were changed to WGLQ, known then (and still) on the air as "Magic 97." The station has broadcast an adult-oriented contemporary hit format since the very beginning. Originally, WGLQ was live from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and automated the remainder of the time, but more live and local announcers were eventually added. As CHR stations go, WGLQ has generally always been quite conservative, because many businesses in the Upper Peninsula wouldn't want to advertise on a station playing rap music. The station's playlist is heavily dayparted, with "urban" and
rhythmic contemporary product played mostly at night and on syndicated shows such as "Open House Party ," hosted byJohn Garabedian andAmerican Top 40 withRyan Seacrest (CHR version). The station serves Escanaba, Iron Mountain, Marquette and Munising in the central Upper Peninsula. The station can also be reached as far south as Peshtigo, WI and across
Lake Michigan as far east as Traverse Cty, MI.Sources
