History
Although a small commune, Saint-Acheul is well known to archaeologists, as it gives its name to the
Acheulean industry of stone tool users in Europe, Africa and Asia. The earliest human activity in the area, from theLower Palaeolithic , was some of the first earlyprehistoric evidence ever identified. In the middle of the 19th century, flint tools had been found by Dr.Jean-Paul Rigollot [ "Instruments en silex trouvés à Saint-Acheul" (1854).] Noted French archaeologistsJean Albert Gaudry andGabriel de Mortillet also investigated the site, the latter coining the term Acheulean for the tools that were discovered. A schoolteacher, one Victor Cormont, discovered a new deposit in a quarry near Saint-Acheul [Pierre Pierrard, "Histoire du Nord", Hachette 1978 p. 17] .
In the first century AD the Romans settled the area and a monastery was built in St Acheul during the Middle Ages.Saint Ulphia was a hermit here during the 8th century. clree also
