Robert J. "Bob" Duffy (born August 21 1954) is the Democratic mayor of Rochester, New York. He was elected the 65th mayor of the city in November 2005 and took office on January 1 2006. Prior to running for office, Duffy served as the city's police chief from 1998-2005. He was deputy chief from 1992 to 1998.

Family life

Duffy was born and raised in Rochester, the son of Catherine Cuddihy and Cornelius (Neil) Duffy. He graduated from the Aquinas Institute and joined the Rochester Police Department in 1976. He earned a Bachelor's of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1993 and a Master of Arts Degree in Public Administration from the Syracuse University in 1998.

Duffy has a wife, Barbara, and two daughters Erin and Shannon.

Campaign for Mayor

Duffy retired as Chief to run in the Democratic Primary for Mayor in 2005. Duffy won the Democratic party primary in September 2005 and the general election in November 2005.

Duffy outspent all other general election opponents by almost 10 to 1, raising over $10,760,000 in his campaign as of the last December filing, including a last-minute pre-primary personal loan of $60,000 to his campaign. His fund raising set a new record for a Rochester Mayoral election.

Administration

During the opening months of his administration, Mayor Duffy closed down the fast ferry service across Lake Ontario between Toronto and Rochester. He also secured a substantial additional influx of state aid for city coffers, and launched a program to demolish vacant and derelict houses in city neighborhoods. He recently (on December 8 2006) helped make an impromptu roadside arrest. Mayor Duffy sold the fast-ferry in April 2007 to a company in Germany for $30 million.
