monocotyledon ousflowering plant s in the orderPoales . The family is large, with about 1,150-1,200 species described in ten genera. The family is widely distributed, with the centers of diversity for the group occurring intropical regions, particularly theAmericas . Very few species extend totemperate regions, with e.g. only 16 species in theUnited States , mostly in the southern states fromCalifornia toFlorida , only two species inCanada , and only one species ("Eriocaulon aquaticum") inEurope . They tend to be associated with wet soils, many growing in shallow water. The species are mostly
herbaceous perennial plant s, though some areannual plant s; they resemble plants in the related familiesCyperaceae (sedges) andJuncaceae (rushes), and like them, have rather small, wind-pollinatedflower s grouped together incapitulum -like inflorescences.;Genera
