INI (hip hop group)

INI (hip hop group)

INI is a hip-hop group comprised of Rass, Rob-O, Grap Luva, and Marco Polo who continued the group with new members after it was disbanded. INI, whose album "Center of Attention" is one of two included on "", a double LP of Pete Rock's mid-1990s production work, reissued by Rapster Distribution in 2003. The single from "Center of Attention", "Fakin' Jax", featured Pete Rock himself. The album "Center of Attention" is one of the most bootlegged, unreleased albums in Hip-Hop history. Despite the fact that Pete Rock is not an official member of INI, the group is synonymous with his name, as he produced "Center of Attention" in entirety and Grap Luva is his younger brother.

"Center of Attention"'s most well known song, "Fakin' Jax," was recorded directly following the break up of the hip hop duo Pete Rock & CL Smooth. Upset with the behaviour of his long time recording partner, Rock aired his greivances implicitly in "Fakin' Jax"'s opening verse. In an interview with Jerry Barrow, Rock stated, in reference to "Fakin' Jax": "That was fresh from the break up with CL Smooth. That first verse was talking about him. You can't call yourself family then turn around and bite the hand that feeds you. That's how that song came about." [See http://www.jerrylbarrow.com/wordpress/?p=56]
