- Babel Label
The Babel Label is a
record label was founded in 1994 byOliver Weindling . It primarily records and releasesjazz album s from UK artists. Ongoing relationships include artists such asBilly Jenkins ,Christine Tobin andHuw Warren . A close relationship has been forged with a number of musicians from the F-IRE Collective, such asTom Arthurs ,Pete Wareham ,Finn Peters andSeb Rochford . The label has been a major influence on a "revival" of interest in jazz in the UK over recent years. Currently this includes the successful crossover of some releases such as those of Polar Bear andAcoustic Ladyland into the pop world, and the work of the likes ofHuw Warren using classical music byJohn Dowland and others. Another side of Babel's work is withPenny Rimbaud andLast Amendment such as his reworking ofHowl ("How?", released 2004). Many of the sleeves are designed byGee Vaucher .The label releases six albums a year. For 2007 these include
Led Bib ,Billy Jenkins ,Tom Arthurs andFraud . The label is also working with theVortex Jazz Club on a joint venture, the first release of which is byPortico Quartet and which was nominated for the2008 Mercury Music Prize .See also
