American Seating

American Seating Inc., located in Grand Rapids, Michigan was established in 1886 under the name Grand Rapids School Furniture. Their first product was the once ubiquitous school seat that combined a chair and desk. School seating has changed dramatically since the company introduced this innovative design, however, these desk/chair combination school sets are now prized antiques.

The company currently serves the education, transportation, office, sports and entertainment industries providing school and bus seating, contract modular office furniture, bleachers, as well as stadium and theatre seating.

Among their major competitors are Steelcase and Herman Miller, both also based in the West Michigan area.

History

American Seating's labor force is organized under the United Auto Workers and was the site of a strike that turned violent in the 1980s.
