Butterton

Butterton

Butterton is a small village in the Staffordshire Peak District of England (gbmapping|SK075565). It is west of Wettonmill in the Manifold Valley and north of Grindon. The village is just to the west of the limestone area, and so is mainly built of local sandstone. It was formerly on the old pack-horse route to the copper mine at Ecton

Butterton was served by a railway station which was opened by the Leek and Manifold Valley Light Railway on June 27, 1904, whilst being entirely operated by the North Staffordshire Railway. The line closed in 1934, and the route of the railway past the station is now designated the Manifold Way, a walk- and cycle-path.

Butterton has several businesses including an old traditional pub, [http://www.blacklioninn.co.uk/ The Black Lion Inn] which offers food and accommodation, and Bagshaws Butchers. Butterton is roughly eight miles from the [http://www.altontowers.com/ Alton Towers Theme Park] .

Butterton is served by The Church of St Bartholomew, details of which can be found [http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/STS/Butterton/index.html here] .
