Calçoene is a
municipality located in the eastern of the state ofAmapá inBrazil . Its population is 7,208 and its area is 14,269 km². There was aRussia n émigrés colony in its area in the first decades of 20th century.In May 2006, archeologists announced they had found a pre-colonial astronomical observatory possibly 500 to 2,000 years old near Calçoene, which is in the
Amazon River basin nearFrench Guiana . ArchaeologistMariana Petry Cabral of theAmapa Institute of Scientific and Technological Research (IEPA) said that the observatory is a circle built of 127 blocks of granite, each 3 meters (10 ft) high.See also
