San Marino is located in SouthernEurope , an enclave (landlocked) in centralItaly , which it borders for 39 km. The smallest independent state by area in Europe after Vatican andMonaco , San Marino is dominated by the Apennines. Located at coord|43|46|N|12|25|E|, it covers an area of 60.5 km² (23 sq miles), which is about the size ofSyracuse, New York . It has a Mediterranean climate with mild to cool winters and warm, sunny summers. Overshadowed by mountains, this country is known to extract building stone; only 17% of its territory is arable. Several rivers flow through the country, the largest being the Ausa, the Marano, and theSan Marino River .Political Geography
