Korea Taekwondo Association
- Korea Taekwondo Association
The first Taekwondo association as recognized by the government of Korea. The Korea Taekwondo Association (KTA), once called the Korea Tae Soo Do Association, is now a Member National Association (MNA) of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) in South Korea. Early History
In 1955, the Korea Kong Soo Do Association was an early attempt at merging the individual schools, or Kwans, under one entity controlled by the government. After a falling out of two main schools, Chung Do Kwan and Oh Do Kwan, the Korea Kong Soo Do Association became inactive.
During the same time, Hwang Kee created the Korea Tang Soo Do Association, hoping to receive official recognition from Korea. After a first failed attempt, Hwang Kee convinced the leaders of the Korea Kong Soo Do Association to merge into the Korea So Bahk Do Association.
Formally created in 1961, the Korea Tae Soo Do association hoped to merge together the individual Kwans of Korea under one nationally recognized umbrella. Although the name changed in 1965, the association's mission to share the empty handed art commonly known today as Taekwondo, was not dampened.
Outside of Korea
The KTA created the International Taekwondo Federation to spread Taekwondo throughout the world. Once General Choi Hong Hi relocated the ITF headquarters to Toronto, Canada, the KTA created a new international vein, the World Taekwondo Federation. The WTF is the international leg of the KTA and the representative International Federation (IF) for Taekwondo competition in the Olympic Summer Games of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
