Marquette, Michigan is the PBS member station, serving Michigan'sUpper Peninsula . The station first went on the air in1972 . The station is owned and operated byNorthern Michigan University .WNMU serves all communities in the UP, over the air on channel 13 in the central UP, and on cable regionwide, including portions of northern Wisconsin not served by
WPNE-TV orWLEF-TV . It is also seen on Charter cable inSault Ste. Marie, Michigan , instead ofWCMU-TV , which the rest of its market gets. WNMU was part of the Shaw line-up on itsSault Ste. Marie, Ontario system until 2002, when it was replaced with Detroit'sWTVS .The transmitter for WNMU-TV is located just outside of Ishpeming in Ely Township. The antenna is 1,000 feet tall.
The future of WNMU radio and TV was threatened in recent years, as budget cuts led to a proposed sale or closure of the stations. However, new funding was approved, keeping the station on the air.
Transition to Digital TV
When the transition to Digital tv is done in February 2009, WNMU will turn off its analong signal in chanel 13 and do a
flash cut and move its digital signal to VHF channel 13. At that time, WNMU will vacate channel 33 which is currently being used for digital broadcasts.External links
