James' Fort

James' Fort ( _ga. Dún Rí Shéamuis)is located on Castlepark peninsula in Kinsale harbour, on the opposite site of the River Bandon from Kinsale and overlooking the town. Charles Fort is located on the opposite side of the harbour.

Construction of the fort, which is named after James I of England and VI of Scotland, started in 1602, immediately after the Battle of Kinsale, on the site of an earlier fortification, called "Castle Ny-Parke" [cite book |url=http://books.google.com/books?id=70IDAAAAYAAJ&lpg=PA452|title=Pacata Hibernia: or, A history of the wars in Ireland|date=1810|author=Thomas Stafford] , which accommodated the Spanish forces during the early part of the Siege of Kinsale -- until it was captured by an English contingent commanded by Sir Richard Smyth [cite book |url=http://nobilitynews.blogspot.com/2007/11/burkes-update.html|isbn=978-0-85011-050-0|title=Irish Family Records|date=1976|author=Hugh Montgomery-Massingbred (editor)] , part of the forces commanded by Charles Blount, Lord Mountjoy.
