The Ship that Never Returned

The Ship that Never Returned

The Ship That Never Returned is an 1865 folk song, written by Henry Clay Work, about a ship that left a harbor and never came back. In some versions it is implied that the ship didn't have enough funds to dock into any of the harbors on the East Coast and so kept looking for a place to dock forever and ever.

The premise was adapted in "Charley on the MTA," created in 1948, about a man who couldn't get off a train for the same reason. The Kingston Trio recorded the song in 1959 (as M.T.A.) and had a hit with the recording in the same year. The tune formed the basis of 'Wreck of the Old 97'.
