Ferguson started his career with Clyde, but was transferred to St Mirren in 1986. He scored in St Mirren's 1-0 win over Dundee United in the 1987
Scottish Cup final.Rangers
Nine months after winning the
Scottish Cup , he transferred toRangers for £850,000 - still the record fee received by St Mirren. He is remembered as a key Rangers player, appearing 336 times and scoring 46 goals. He is the only player to play a part in every season ofRangers historic run of nine titles in a row. He won ten Scottish League titles, a record second only toBobby Lennox of Celtic (who won eleven) playing in each season of Rangers' record-equalling run of nine consecutive championships between 1988-89 and 1996-97, and in the first title win under manager Dick Advocaat, in 1998-99. He played in the team under managersGraeme Souness andWalter Smith . He rarely played underDick Advocaat , however, and moved on to Dunfermline Athletic in2000 . Before the start of the 2002-2003 season, Ferguson emigrated toAustralia to play for Northern Spirit, a club in which Rangers then had a substantial shareholding. More recently, he has played and been made head coach of the Central Coast Mariners inNew South Wales , who play in the AustralianA-league .North Queensland FC

15 September Ferguson was confirmed as the new manager ofNorth Queensland FC leaving his post as assistant manager atCentral Coast Mariners . He will take up the post straight away in order to give the team the best preparation possible for their inaugural season in Australia'sHyundai A League .
