Adel Sedra

Adel Sedra

Adel Sedra is an Egyptian electrical engineer whose research specialization is microelectronics, with particular emphasis on applications in communication and instrumentation systems. He received his bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Cairo University in 1964. This was followed by a master's degree in 1968 and a PhD in 1969, both from the University of Toronto. He then became an assistant professor at the University of Toronto in 1969, and received promotions to associate professor in 1972 and professor in 1978. He served as chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering from 1986 to 1993, and was provost from 1993 to 2002. In 2003, he joined the University of Waterloo as dean of its Faculty of Engineering. He has also co-authored three textbooks, including "Microelectronic Circuits" (co-authored with Prof. K.C. Smith), which is one of the most widely used texts on the subject to date.

Dr. Sedra teaches an undergraduate course in Microelectronics every winter term to electrical and computer engineers.

Biography

Adel Sedra was born in Egypt on November 2, 1943. He received the BSc. degree from Cairo University, Egypt, in 1964, and the MASc. and PhD. degrees from the University of Toronto, Canada, in 1968 and 1969 respectively, all in Electrical Engineering.

Dr. Sedra joined the faculty of the University of Toronto in 1969, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1972 and to Professor in 1978. During 1986-1993, he served as Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering (now Electrical and Computer Engineering). On July 1, 1993 he assumed the position of Vice-President, Provost, and Chief Academic Officer of the University of Toronto.

Professor Sedra specializes in the area of microelectronics. His research has centered on the theory and design of circuits for communication and instrumentation systems and has resulted in about one hundred and thirty papers. His earlier work (late 1960s) was on current-mode circuits and their use in active filter synthesis. In the course of this work, Sedra, together with K.C. Smith, invented the current conveyor, a popular circuit building block that has stimulated considerable interest two decades later.

Adel Sedra's later work on active-RC filter design provided both new circuits as well as general theories that served to tie together many seemingly disconnected circuit topologies. In the late seventies and early '80s he was one of the first few to work on the then emerging switched capacitor filter techniques. More recently, Professor Sedra's work has been on tuneable and adaptive integrated filters.

Professor Sedra has co-authored three textbooks. One of his books Microelectronic Circuits (Oxford University Press) first appeared in 1982, is currently in its fifth edition and has been translated into eight languages, and is currently in use at hundreds of Universities around the world. This book (co-authored by K.C. Smith) represents between its two authors nearly seventy years of thinking about, designing and teaching electronic circuits at all levels and in every possible technology.

Dr. Sedra has served as a consultant to industry and government in Canada and the U.S.A. He has helped found two centres-of-excellence, in information technology and microelectronics, and currently serves on the board of directors of a number of organizations dedicated to the promotion and sponsorship of research. He has also been active in professional societies, most notably the IEEE, serving in a variety of roles.

Dr. Sedra's research and educational activities have won him a number of awards and honours including: Fellow of IEEE (1984); the 1984 Darlington award, the 1987 Guillemin-Cauer Award, and the 1994 Education Award, all of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society; Fellow, Ryerson Polytechnic University (1989); the 1993 Information Technology of Canada/NSERC Research Excellence Award; and the 1996 IEEE Education Medal.

Adel Sedra lives in Toronto with his wife Doris and two children, Paul and Mark.
