November 3 ,2006 , "Carnival Liberty" departedRome ,Italy , toFort Lauderdale (Port Everglades). During the 16-day transatlantic voyage, over 700 people contracted the contagiousnorovirus illness. Originally, the next cruise was scheduled to depart on November 19 for a six-day cruise. The November 19 cruise was rescheduled to depart Fort Lauderdale on November 21 for a four-day cruise using new ports-of-call. Safety measures were also enacted on a few of the future cruises to prevent further contamination. These safety measures included fully suspending self-service on the buffet lines. July 2 ,2007 , at about 11:35 p.m., "Carnival Liberty" alerted Coast Guard that Scott Durbin, 29, a middle school science teacher from maryland, had possibly jumped overboard. Durbin fell about convert|36|ft|m into the water about convert|50|mi|km off the coast ofBoca Raton . Crew aboard threw life rings and jackets over the side. Coast Guard located Durbin about an hour later.
