- Anempathetic sound
Anempathetic sound in a film is the opposite of
empathetic sound : sound—music or sound effects—that seems to exhibit a conspicuous indifference to what is going on in a film's plot, possibly thereby enhancing a sense of the tragic, as when a radio continues to play a happy tune when a character dies, or in Hitchcock's "Psycho" the continued sound of the shower running, as if nothing had happened.
