Name

The Recollect fathers chose a stag for it symbolizes a Christian who, filled with moral ideas, runs fast to God swiftly yet quietly in pursuit of his goals.

Bravo Baste!

The use of “Stag” as the monicker of this institution started when it joined the NCAA in 1969. A stag symbolizes a Christian who, filled with moral ideas, runs fast to God swiftly yet quietly in pursuit of his goals

Placing second behind Philippine Christian University in the overall standings last season, the Stags prepare to clinch this season’s overall title through continuous practice, said SSC-R athletics moderator Francisco Gusi. He also mentioned that among the preparations undertaken by their squad is their participation in various off-season tournaments like the Fr. Martin’s Cup and MICABA for the Men’s Basketball and the Shakey’s V-League for Women’s Volleyball. These off-season tournaments provide an avenue for the par-ticipating teams to get more experience, learn more tricks, and gel well with fellow teammates.

When asked about his squad’s weaknesses, Gusi said that the un-availability of resources like a football field and swimming pools hinders the Stags’ full potential. Although, he is still optimistic of a good performance from his teams which would bring in titles under their grip.

Judging their 80th season basketball performance as “poor,” placing only sixth among the eight squads, Gusi revealed the team’s challenge of coping in the upcoming season with anew and younger lineup. He mentioned that only three or four of their basketball vets would be playing in their red and gold shirts this season. Gusi predicted Colegio de San Juan de Letran and Philippine Christian University as the leading contenders, noting their intact lineup. He mentioned that the real top seed could only be determined when the games kick-off.The Stags, committed to bring honor and prestige to the whole Sebastianian community, draws their strength from the warm support of their students, alumni and administrators. With that, Gusi enjoined the whole Sebastianian community to support their team’s quest for victory in this 81st NCAA season.

Rival Schools

Colegio de San Juan de Letran - Knights
After both Ateneo and La Salle left, San Sebastian (frequently shortened to "Baste") strengthened their basketball program. The acquisition of Paul "Bong" Alvarez to San Sebastian and Samboy Lim to Letran provided several close games in the 1980s which led to the birth of the rivalry.

In the 1980s, Letranites were notorious for yelling profanities at the San Sebastian players, and on one occasion, led to a rumble at Vito Cruz Avenue when at the last second, a power interruption occurred, causing confusion on what team won the championship. The rumbles between the two schools have become more frequent which solidified the intense rivalry between the two schools. Both Alvarez and Lim would play as pros and both became superstar players adored by fans in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) after they graduated. Paul Alvarez would later make history by becoming one of the two first Filipino to play in an American professional basketball league. He played for the Pennsylvania ValleyDawgs of the United States Basketball League or USBL for the 2006 season together with his team mate Vince Hizon.

The rivalry continued in the turn of the millennium when the Stags, met the Knights in the finals twice. This led to several memorable games in which the Knights won the 1998 and 2003 championships, all at the expense of the Stags

Jose Rizal University - Heavy Bombers
The rivalry started in 1972 where Jose Rizal was playing in the championship against new member San Sebastian. The Heavy Bombers was bannered by Philip Cezar, David Cezar, Ed Carvajal, Jess Sta. Maria, Cris Calilan, Olimpio Santos, Jimmy Santos and Norberto Rivera. San Sebastian has their own superstar with the like of Dave Supnet. JRU (JRC then) captures the NCAA crown which up to this date is the last time Jose Rizal win a championship. Years later the two team are again figured in a mini rivalry, San Sebastian's Paul Alvarez and Jose Rizal's Vergel Meneses figured in a PABL Slam Dunk contest in 1987. Meneses won the contest and during regular NCAA games these individual are giving their best shot for their own personal rivalry and to entrtain the fans and students who watched the game. San Sebastian become one of the successful team in the NCAA and wrote a history when they won 5 straight championships in a row and also produced number of players in the PBA. Jose Rizal continues to struggles in the years to come and not until 1999 where the Heavy Bombers made it to the finals but lost to the defending champion Letran Knights. The finals figured a free for all to both students, alumni's and players at the ULTRA that resulted officials to stop the game in the middle of the regulation.

The rivalry continues during final four appearance of both school from NCAA season 2000, 2002, 2003 and in the NCAA finals of 2001 where the Stags consistenly beaten the Heavy Bombers. Not until 2007 NCAA season when San Sebastian final four chances was denied by Jose Rizal via a 7 points winning margin in a come from behind victory. The Stags was ahead by 7 points against the Heavy Bombers 1:10 to go in regulation. Jose Rizal capitalized on the errors of San Sebabstian and able to forced an overtime and won the game. This allows JRU to grab the no. 3 spot in the final four and towed Mapua at no. 4. Alumni's and students of both teams are very much part of the game which conclude by some NCAA insiders predicting that both schools will likely to renew their rivalry in the next NCAA season.

Saint Benilde - Blazers
This short lived rivalry sparked when the De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde, who joined only in 1998, met San Sebastian College - Recoletos (or simply Baste) in the finals of 2000, and 2002. They also met in the Final Four of 2001. CSB won in the Finals of 2000, bannered by what is dubbed as the best CSB Blazers team ever assembled. With 1999 NCAA Rookie of the Year and eventual 2002 NCAA MVP Sunday Salvacion, Jondan Salvador, and 2000 NCAA Rookie of the Year Alejandro Magpayo leading the charge, the St. Benilde Blazers beat the formidable San Sebastian Stags and won their first NCAA seniors basketball championship title, despite joining the league a season earlier. This marks the fastest win for any new school in the league since the World War.

However, the Stags avenged their defeat and triumphed over CSB in the Final Four of 2001, and again in the Finals of 2002 where they swept the Blazers, 2-0.

an Sebastian Cheerleading Squad

The NCAA Cheerdance Competition is an annual one-day event of the National Collegiate Athletic Association for cheerleading. It was sponsored by Nestlé in 2004 and 2005 and was known as the NCAA Nestlé Non-Stop Cheerdance Competition. On 2007, the competition was sponsored by Samsung and was called as Samsung NCAA Cheerdance Competition.

All member schools field in their respective pep/cheering squads in a predetermined sequence. The sequence is determined by drawing of lots a week before the competition. Judges who are known for their prowess in cheerleading, dancing and gymnasitics, plus a representative from Nestlé determines the winning pep squad (when they sponsored the event).

It is the only coeducational sport in the NCAA. However, it is not counted in the tabulation to determine the General Champion

The Official Cheerleading Sqaud of San Sebastian College - Recoletos de Manila is the San Sebastian Golden Stags Cheerleading Association.
