KJKJ (107.5 FM, "KJ108") is a radio station broadcasting an active rock format serving Grand Forks, North Dakota. It first began broadcasting in the 1985. The station is currently owned by Clear Channel Communications.

The Big Dogz

The station's coarse comedy satirical news and variety morning show pranksters, The Big Dogz (sometimes spelled Dawgz), is one of the first of their type, commonly compared to the syndicated morning show Bob and Tom and Tom Barnard's show on KQRS-FM. The Big Dogz is hosted by Bill Tanner and Pat Mars, and has been on the air for 13 years. The Big Dogz are somewhat local celebrities having a several business name menu items after them. The first item was the Bigdog Breakfast at a sports bar named Players; since gone out of business. The Bigdog Sub soon came on the scene at Grand Junction Grilled Subs. Others followed and now the Big Dogz have the Big Dog pizza at Rhombus Pizza, the Dog Pub Club sandwich at Bonzers Pub, the Dirty Dawg at the Crosstown Lounge, which the Big Dogs promise is the best 7" of salty meat you can swallow, and the Big Dog Burger prepared at Hastings Landing in Drayton; a 3 lb. burger..before the fixin's. Other Big Dog products have included Big Dog Urinal Mats and Fistfuls-o-Porn. The Big Dogz also talk to comedian Bob Zany weekly, and have been controversial at times.

One of the most notorious stunts pulled by the Big Dogs was an April Fools prank. A year after the devastating flood of Grand Forks in 1997, the Dogz announced that a downtown bridge would be blown up to assist water flow though the city. They said that a local air force bomber would conduct a run and that the public was invited watch as long as everybody stayed behind barricades. The resulting phone calls to city hall prompted the mayor of the city at that time; Pat Owens, to plead for the joke to end.

History

KJKJ first signed on in 1985 as "Rock 108" with an album-oriented rock (AOR), a predecessor to today's classic rock format, similar to that of the well-known KQRS-FM in the Minneapolis, Minnesota. During the early 1990s, Rock 108 tweaked to classic rock, the descender of the AOR format. In 1995, The Big Dogz debuted as their satirical news morning show, sometimes being compared to the syndicated Bob and Tom, and has been the top rated morning show for many years. Clear Channel Communications bought out several radio stations including KJ108 in 2000, and KJ108's format morphed into a mainstream rock station, and later active rock.
