The École Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications (also known as ENST or Télécom or TELECOM ParisTech) is one of the most prestigious and selectivegrandes écoles inFrance and one of the finest institutions in the field ofTelecommunications . Located inParis , it is also a member of prestigiousParisTech andInstitut TELECOM .It has established a school named
Institut Eurécom in collaboration withEPFL atSophia-Antipolis .History
*In 1845, Alphonse Foy, director of telegraphic lines, proposed a school specializing in telegraphy for Polytechnicians. His proposition was rejected.
*The school was founded on12 July 1878 as the École Professionnelle Supérieure des Postes et Télégraphes (EPSPT).
*In 1912 the school's name was changed to École Supérieure des Postes et Télégraphes (ESPT).
*In 1934 the ESPT moved to rue Barrault, in the13th arrondissement of Paris .
*In 1938 the school was renamed École Nationale Supérieure des Postes, Télégraphes et Téléphones (ENSPTT), and in the same year, thePresident of France ,Albert Lebrun honored the schoolLegion of Honor .
*During theSecond World War , in 1942, the ENSPTT was divided into two schools: the ENSPTT and ENST. The ENSPTT was closed on31 December 2002 .
*In 1971 theENST passed under the direct guardianship of the "Direction générale des télécommunications", and the development of the telecommunications during this period drove the state to create two associate schools: theENST Bretagne in 1977 at Brest, and theINT in 1979 at Évry.
*In 1992 theENST , together with theEPFL , founded theInstitut Eurécom atSophia-Antipolis .
*On26 December 1996 theGroupe des Écoles des Télécommunications (GET) was established. It consists of a group of telecommunications schools including the ENST, theENST Bretagne , theInstitut national des télécommunications (INT), andInstitut Eurécom .Present
Future engineers are recruited from college ("Classes Préparatoires") or after a bachelors degree in scientific areas (physics, mechanics, chemistry, computer science etc.). Some other admission possibilities are after completing the
École Polytechnique or from the French military and police. ENST also provides education for the Corps of Telecommunications. The Engineering diploma delivered by ENST is roughly equivalent to a Master of Engineering in the USA. Around 250 engineers graduate each year from ENST. 20% to 25% of the graduates are non-French. Courses cover all aspects of computer and communication engineering: electronics, signal processing, software engineering, networking, economics etc.
Research at ENST
Research at Télécom ParisTech consists of:
*The optimization and the transmission of information
*The improvement in data processing
*Microelectronics, such as FPGA and DSP systems
*Image and signal processing, wavelets
*Artificial intelligence, data mining, distributed and real-time systemsTélécom ParisTech has four research laboratories:
*Department of Electronics and Communications : This laboratory consists of about one hundred researchers and teaching researchers (37 tenured) within 7 research groups
*Department of Computer Science and Networking
*Department of Signal and Image Processing
*Department of Economic and Social SciencesThese departments are associated with the
CNRS through the "Laboratory of the Communication and Processing of Information".Formations for Bachelor degree
*"The common trunk (1styear)" For the students admitted in 1st year, the "tronc commun" is devoted to the "bases des connaissances indispensables" (BCI). It unfolds them to Paris and lasts a year for the students coming from the common Competition and those admitted on dismissed titles. It takes place in Paris whether they've chosen the "Paris courses" or the "Sophia-antipolis courses".
*"The optional unified Cycle (2nd and 3rd years) - Paris courses"The optional cycle is composed of 4 semesters dedicated to the training of the engineers. The teachings of the optional cycle are organized in more than 120 "unités d’enseignement"(E.U).
*The optional unified Cycle (2nd and 3rd years) - Sophia-antipolis courses (atInstitut Eurécom )"The optional cycle is composed of 4 semesters, one of them being dedicated to end of study training. The optional unified cycle works on the model of the unities of capitalizable values called "modules longs" (42 hours - 4 credits) or "modules courts" (21 hours - 2 credits).
*"Studies abroad, Masters recherche & other opportunities for the 3rd year"Formations for Master degree
ENST offers Mastères spécialisés (MS), Masters Recherche (MR) and Master of Science (MSc) programmes in different domains.
