website=Edakkal is a remote location in the
Wayanad district ofKerala inIndia , where the tallest mountain in the district,Ambukuthi mala , is located. Three pre-historic caves (Edakkal Caves ), dating from around 8,000 BC, had been discovered on Ambukuthi Mala. There are stone age pictorial writings on the walls of these natural caves (Cave murals ).The cave drawings depict ancient tribal chieftains, elephants, queens and tools. A less ancient script from the 3rd or 4th century BC is also seen in the impeccably maintained caves.
The site is reached by a 1 kilometre path. Above the caves is the spectacular view of the junction of Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu borders through the forests.
The trek is steep but worth the effort.
Visitors are not allowed to bring food into the caves but photography is available, for 10 Rs. per still camera. Tourists are allowed to carry only water bottles.
The Caves open for public viewing at 08:30 and close by 16:30.
Carvings on the walls of
Edakkal Caves were created during different time periods. The oldest carvings date from theNeolithic Period. A British Officer stationed here, during a hunting expedition, came across these caves.* Nearest big town is
