Demographics

census GR|2 of 2000, there were 5,938 people, 2,086 households, and 1,689 families residing in the town. Thepopulation density was 188.3 people per square mile (72.7/km²). There were 2,263 housing units at an average density of 71.8/sq mi (27.7/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.50% White, 0.40% Black or African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races. 1.43% of the population wereHispanic orLatino of any race.There were 2,086 households out of which 40.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.3% were married couples living together, 4.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.0% were non-families. 13.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.85 and the average family size was 3.15.
In the town the population was spread out with 28.5% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 33.6% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 7.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 108.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 104.3 males.
