Lake Mills is a city in Jefferson County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 4,843 at the 2000 census. The city is located partially within the Town of Lake Mills.

History

Lake Mills, originally called Tyranena from the indigenous name meaning "sparkling waters," is located on the outlet of Rock Creek from Rock Lake. The water power supplied by water pouring from the lake into the creek was first utilized by a sawmill and then grist mill built by founder Joseph Keyes, hence the name. Geography

Lake Mills is located at coor dms|43|4|48|N|88|54|33|W|city (43.080108, -88.909209)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.8 square miles (9.9 km²), of which, 3.4 square miles (8.9 km²) of it is land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km²) of it (10.47%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 4,843 people, 1,924 households, and 1,289 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,415.6 people per square mile (546.8/km²). There were 2,065 housing units at an average density of 603.6/sq mi (233.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.54% White, 0.17% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.87% Asian, 0.41% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 2.33% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,924 households out of which 33.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.0% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% were non-families. 26.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.05.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 31.0% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $44,132, and the median income for a family was $54,131. Males had a median income of $36,394 versus $24,635 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,929. About 5.3% of families and 7.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.9% of those under age 18 and 6.1% of those age 65 or over.
