cochlea of theinner ear . It separatesscala media fromscala vestibuli . Together with thebasilar membrane it creates a compartment in the cochlea filled withendolymph , which is important for the function of theorgan of Corti . It primarily functions as adiffusion barrier, allowing nutrients to travel from theperilymph to theendolymph of themembranous labyrinth .Histologically , the membrane is composed of two layers of flattenedepithelium , separated by abasal lamina . Its structure suggests that its function is transport of fluid andelectrolytes .Reissner's membrane is named after German
anatomist Ernst Reissner (1824-1878).
