Career

Martínez was signed as an undrafted free agent catcher in by|1998 by the Boston Red Sox. In by|1999 Martínez started his professional career playing for the Gulf Coast Red Sox. Over the next five years he never rose above Single-A+ level. Martínez was converted from catcher to a pitcher in July by|2004. [cite web

His fastball reaches 97 mph and he also throws a decent changeup and a slider. The transition to pitching showed signs of success later in 2005, when he posted a 2.10 ERA with seven saves and 46 strikeouts in 34.1 innings for Class-A Wilmington. Promoted to Double-A Portland, he finished with a 1.50 ERA, one save, and 13 strikeouts in 18.0 innings. In by|2007 he played for the Red Sox Triple-A affiliate the Pawtucket Red Sox.cite web
