Laufitu

Laufitu

Laufitu was a Tongan-Fijian chieftainess. She was the first wife of Rasolo, who was the third Roko Sau of the Lau Islands and first installed holder of the title Tui Nayau. She was by him the mother of Malani, the seventh Roko Sau and the second to hold the Tui Nayau title of the Vuanirewa dynasty. As Rasolo was the first of the Vuanirewa Roko Sau's to be installed as Tui Nayau, it is fair to say that Laufitu, as senior wife would have been the first to hold and to be correctly referred to as Radini Nayau.

She is recorded to have been the daughter of the Chief (Lord) of Totoya and a Tongan woman of the Ha’a Gatatupu of Vavau. She and her younger sister Radavu, mother of Taliai Tupou - eighth Roko Sau and third Tui Nayau, were sent as wives for Rasolo. It is from these two women that the two noble households of Vatuwaqa and Matailakeba claim descent from.
