Throughout the 1970s and 1980s WZON was known as WLBZ "Z62" Bangor's top 40 station but changed to talk radio (and was the first
affiliate in Bangor to carryRush Limbaugh ) When station management went bankrupt and sold, King bought the station (along with 100.3WKIT ) and changed the format to sports.Programming
WZON airs a combination of locally and nationally sourced programming.
Local Radio
WZON's Morning Show airs from 6-9 am Monday through Friday and is co-hosted by Dale Duff and Clem LaBree. The afternoon show airs from 4-6 pm and is called "The Shootaround," and is co-hosted by Jeff Solari and Pat Spekhardt. On weeknights when there are Red Sox games, the afternoon show extends for 30 minutes of extra Red Sox-only talk.
WZON broadcasts many high school sporting events, American Legion baseball games, Husson College athletic events, and other local events (such as the Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race). WZON has brought Red Sox broadcasters and ESPN personalities to Bangor for special forums.
WZON was the long-time home of
University of Maine sports until the Summer of 2007, when the broadcasting rights were reassigned by the University of Maine and it's media contractor Learfield Sports to Clearchannel'sWVOM andWGUY .National Radio
In the absence of WZON local shows or local sports broadcasting, WZON airs
ESPN Radio and select programming fromWestwood One . WZON airs allBoston Red Sox games andBoston Celtics basketball.Internet-only channel
WZON also has an internet only station, called "WZONi" or "the i" that carries overfill sporting events when WZON has prior event commitments (such as
