WZON features programming from ABC Radio, ESPN Radio and Sporting News Radio.

History

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s WZON was known as WLBZ "Z62" Bangor's top 40 station but changed to talk radio (and was the first affiliate in Bangor to carry Rush Limbaugh) When station management went bankrupt and sold, King bought the station (along with 100.3 WKIT) and changed the format to sports.

Programming

WZON airs a combination of locally and nationally sourced programming.

Local Radio

WZON's Morning Show airs from 6-9 am Monday through Friday and is co-hosted by Dale Duff and Clem LaBree. The afternoon show airs from 4-6 pm and is called "The Shootaround," and is co-hosted by Jeff Solari and Pat Spekhardt. On weeknights when there are Red Sox games, the afternoon show extends for 30 minutes of extra Red Sox-only talk.

WZON broadcasts many high school sporting events, American Legion baseball games, Husson College athletic events, and other local events (such as the Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race). WZON has brought Red Sox broadcasters and ESPN personalities to Bangor for special forums.

WZON was the long-time home of University of Maine sports until the Summer of 2007, when the broadcasting rights were reassigned by the University of Maine and it's media contractor Learfield Sports to Clearchannel's WVOM and WGUY.

National Radio

In the absence of WZON local shows or local sports broadcasting, WZON airs ESPN Radio and select programming from Westwood One. WZON airs all Boston Red Sox games and Boston Celtics basketball.

Internet-only channel

WZON also has an internet only station, called "WZONi" or "the i" that carries overfill sporting events when WZON has prior event commitments (such as Boston Red Sox games). WZON also uses the internet channel to broadcast local sporting events of little interest to those within the signal range but of great interest to those far away, including the Senior League World Series.
