Khem Raj Bhatta Mayalu is a
Nepal ese politician and a leader of theNepali Congress (Democratic) . During the Panchayat regime he was the general secretary of the underground leftist groupNepal Janabadi Morcha , and lived in exile inLucknow ,India . After the1985 bombings, which NJM claimed responsibility for, Mayalu was awarded a death sentence "in absentia ".In the 1994 legislative elections Mayalu was the candidate of NJM in the Dadeldhura constituency. Mayalu came second with 9966 votes. The seat was won by
Sher Bahadur Deuba ofNepali Congress , who got 20701 votes.Later Mayalu joined the Nepali Congress. He won the
Bardia 3 seat in the1999 legislative elections as a Nepali Congress candidate. He got 15574 votes.On
February 23 2001 Maoists attacked Mayalu's residence in Guleriya. In total Maoists have seized 15bigha s of land belonging to Mayalu.When Sher Bahadur Deuba split away from Nepali Congress and formed
Nepali Congress (Democratic) , Mayalu followed him. OnOctober 18 2001 , Mayalu was named Minister of General Administration in Deuba's cabinet. Somewhat ironically, the former police chiefDil Bahadur Lama was named as the Assistant Minister of General Administration. Lama had issued Mayalu's arrest warrant during the 1980s.Mayalu was arrested on
March 8 and later onMay 29 2005 following a crack-downs on prodemocracy protests.
