George Edwin Haas (born
May 26 ,1935 ,Paducah, Kentucky ) is a formeroutfielder , coach, manager and scout in AmericanMajor League Baseball . Haas spent many years as a skipper in thefarm system of theAtlanta Braves and replacedJoe Torre as Atlanta’s manager after the 1984 season. However, his 1985 Braves squad won only 50 of 121 games (.413) and he was fired August 26 and succeeded by interim pilotBobby Wine .In his playing days, Haas was an outfielder who batted left-handed and threw right-handed. He graduated from Paducah’s St. John High School and signed his first professional contract with the
Chicago Cubs . He made the majors with the Cubs in 1957 and was traded to theMilwaukee Braves in the offseason. His MLB career consisted of 55 games (1957-58; 1960) with those two clubs, batting .243 with onehome run . A broken ankle, which cost him the entire 1959 season, may have hindered his deveopment as a player.He remained with the Braves after his minor league playing career ended, managing and coaching in the minor leagues (1965-73; 1978-84), and serving as a major league coach (1974-77). He then served as a special assignment scout for the
Montreal Expos (1986-93) andBoston Red Sox (1994-2003). He comes from a baseball family: his brother, Louis, was an infielder in the Braves' organization from 1959-62; his sons, Matt and Danny, are currently scouts for major league clubs; cousinsPhil Roof andGene Roof are former major league players and longtime minor league managers, and another cousin, Paul Roof, pitched in the minor leagues.ources
