Peter Cundy

Peter Cundy

Wing Commander Peter John Cundy DSO AFC RAF (3 October, 1916 – 4 August, 2005) was a British pilot credited as one of the top U-boat killers of the Second World War.

At RAF Coastal Command he was involved in new techniques for locating and destroying enemy submarines - among these air to sea radar and weapons.

He was awarded the DSO for attacking and sinking U-628 in the face of a determined defence by the U-boat and returning safely on three engines. It had been the first occasion of the use of the Hedgehog anti-submarine weapon from an aircraft.

He was given the Air Force Cross for his part in the development of the Leigh Light - which enabled bombers to attack U-boats at night.

On a single patrol on February 26, 1943 in the Bay of Biscay his plane spotted and attacked "U-437" and later "U-508". Both survived depth charges but the latter was sufficiently damaged to return to port.
