Gampaha District is separated from Colombo mainly by theKelani River .The word "Gampaha" in Sinhala (ගම්පහ ) is composed from 2 words – "Gam", which means village and - "paha", which means five - literally meaning "Five Villages". The five villages in the Gampaha city is
Ihalagama ,Pahalagama ,Medagama ,Aluthgama and Yagoda. Gampaha is about 4km from Miriswatta onColombo -Kandy road. Gampaha is surrounded byYakkala ,Miriswatta ,Minuwangoda andJa-ela towns.
