Transpersonal experience

Transpersonal experience

A transpersonal experience literally means, an experience of transcending the personal. It is often characterized by a total shift in consciousness and the feeling of being one infinite, unbroken life, encompassing all things, transcending all boundaries between one thing or another. The experience is commonly reported as being accompanied by the receiving of special realizations or teachings, vocations and even visions. The word is used for a number of phenomena studied in transpersonal psychology and transpersonal anthropology. The state can be achieved in meditation, in dreams, through ingesting psychedelic drugs or medicines, participation in rituals, or even spontaneously.

An example given by Alex Grey described an LSD experience with his wife Allyson Grey in which he saw himself as a continuous field of intersecting lines, creating an endless interconnected weave throughout the universe, which he refers to as the "Universal Mind Lattice". This was a turning point for the Greys - both a healing and a teaching which changed their lives. They proceeded to dedicate much of their careers as artists to translating these experiences and related visions into paintings, in order to assist others to share in these benefits.
