February 11 ,1890 inAmsterdam — diedJuly 23 ,1964 in Utrecht) was a Dutch scholar of Germanic linguistics andGermanic mythology , ordinarius 1926 to 1945 atLeiden University . During the Second Worldwar Jan de Vries was part of theNederlandsche Kultuurkamer , aNational Socialist censor and the 'scientific' branch of the SS. Despite his involvement with Nazi's his works seems to have been free from National Socialist ideology.Because his scholarly work was not tainted by Nazi Ideology De Vries remains one of the most respected figures in Germanic Philology, and his two-volume "Altgermanische Religionsgeschichte", though now a half-century old, remains an invaluable work on Germanic Religion.
