Heinz Kähler (1905 in
Tetenbüll ,Germany - 1974 inCologne , Germany) was an ancientart historian andarchaeologist .Heinz Kähler studied classical archaeology and art history at the university of
Freiburg inBreisgau . He studied underHans Dragendorff (1870-1941) and completed his dissertation in 1929. Upon being granted a travel stipend from theDeutsches Archäologisches Institut Kähler travelled during 1930-31 inFrance ,Spain ,Greece ,Rome andAsia Minor . He returned toGermany , where he worked at thePergamon Museum inBerlin (1936-37). Afterward he was assistant to the Archaeological Seminar ofErnst Buschor at the University ofMunich (1937-41) as well as in its museum of casts. His major study of the sculpture of the GreatPergamon Altar appeared in 1942. His professorial dissertation was completed there in 1943 while serving in the German army duringWorld War II . After the war his study ofHadrian 's villa at Tivoli appeared in 1950. He was appointed Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University ofSaarbrücken (1953-1960). His work on theArch of Constantine inRome (1953) and the Temple ofFortuna Primigenia ofPraeneste , 1958, both were completed atSaarbrücken . He co-founded withJacques Moreau the "Monumenta Artis Romanae" series of publications, writing personally the volume on the statue ofAugustus fromPrima Porta (1959). In 1960 he succeededAndreas Rumpf at the University atCologne in theInstitut für Klassische Archäologie . He would teach there until 1973. AtCologne he authored his major work, "Rom und sein Imperium" (1962), which was translated into English in 1963 and became widely-used text for Roman art. A second volume in the "Monumenta Artis Romanae" book series on the Gemma Augustea appeared in 1968. Among his many students was the Roman art historianGerhard Koeppel .Publications
