Current Project for Student Journalism

The Current Project for Student Journalism (also known as the Current Project or CPSJ) was founded in 2004 as a non-profit organization dedicated to uniting and empowering students in the United States. The organization does so by promoting student journalism, supporting student journalists, and elevating the student voice to the national stage. The Current Project strives to create an informed college experience, connecting and empowering the national student body. The Current Project does this in a variety of ways, such as providing multimedia journalism opportunities and mentoring relationships with media professionals, hosting events and conferences, and fostering better and more regular communication between student journalists. The Current Project was founded at Harvard University and has representatives and contributors from over 100 colleges and universities around the United States.

Current

Current is a national issues magazine that covers America's youth. Most reporting happens on college campuses, and Current is dedicated to expressing the student voice on both campus and national issues. It draws student journalists from all across the nation and distributes through a network of campuses. Some magazines are also just floating around in bookstores, etc. Current is for students, by students. The editorial content is chosen and generated entirely by students and aims to accurately reflect the college experience. All content and student artwork is original and takes a national angle.

The magazine is published in cooperation with Newsweek magazine. This private-public partnership allows the student staff and contributors of current the opportunity to work with Newsweek’s top editors. Current works with college newspapers and draws its original content from highly-talented student writers, who pitch ideas via contributetocurrent.org. Contribution opportunities are open to any college student. Current has a circulation of over 225,000, distributed on 45 different college campuses nationwide, as well as 20 Kaplan tutoring centers, and to various newsstands around the country. Current is distributed primarily as an insert into college campus newspapers, or directly to students through individual students. Current also features unique artwork from student photographers and illustrators from colleges nationwide. For its winter 2005-2006 issue, almost of all of the artwork and photography was produced through a partnership with students at Parsons New School for Design. Currentproject.org

Currentproject.org is the homepage of the Current Project. Launched on December 5, 2005, the site is the online home for Current content, web-exclusives, and information on the organization. Visitors have a chance to donate to the cause of student journalism and the mission of the Current Project. The site aims to showcase the college students behind it through integration with Facebook.com.

The current network

Campus publications invited to join the current network are handpicked based upon drive and reputation. As the current project partners, these publications have access to exclusive Current events, technology developed to improve newsroom operations, mentoring relationships with professionals at Newsweek and other media companies, and special editorial opportunities with Current magazine. In exchange, the Current Project partner schools help to distribute and promote Current magazine on their individual campuses.
