He was lauded in the banking industry as a leading expert in defensive tactics for avoiding hostiletakeovers . In 1987, he plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to violate the securities laws and one count of tax evasion for failing to report payments from arbitrageurIvan Boesky . Having cooperated with the government, Siegel received only a two-month prison sentence.
