Belton |publisher=ElectionsIreland.org |accessdate=2008-01-30] He was first elected toDáil Éireann in the 1989 general election asTeachta Dála (TD) for the constituency of Longford-Westmeath, but lost his seat at the 1992 general election when contesting the revised constituency of Longford-Roscommon. However, he was then elected to the20th Seanad Éireann in 1993, when he topped the poll for theAdministrative Panel . He regained his Dáil seat at the 1997 general election but lost it again at the 2002 general election toMae Sexton of theProgressive Democrats .
