Gabriel Tiacoh (
February 9 ,1963 –April 4 ,1992 ) was a sprinter fromCôte d'Ivoire best known for winning his nation's sole Olympic medal so far, in 1984.In 1984 he started by winning the
400 metres event at theAfrican Championships in Athletics inRabat . A few weeks later, at the Olympic Games, he managed to win the silver medal with 44.54s, a new African record. At 21 years of age, Tiacoh had become the first Olympic medal winner from aWest Africa n country and so far the only fromCôte d'Ivoire .Tiacoh died in 1992 in
Atlanta ofviral meningitis at the age of only 29.Achievements
