Ê

Ê

(e-circumflex) is a letter of Kurdish and Vietnamese language. This letter also appears in Afrikaans, French, Portuguese, and Welsh language as a variant of letter “e”.

Usage in various languages

Kurdish

Ê is the 7th letter of the Kurdish Kurmanji alphabet and represents IPA|/ɛ/.

Vietnamese

Ê is the 9th letter of the Vietnamese alphabet and represents IPA|/e/ or IPA|/ɜ/. In Vietnamese phonology, diacritics can be added to form the following five forms to represent five tones of ê.

*Unicode|Ề ề
*Unicode|Ể ể
*Unicode|Ễ ễ
*Unicode|Ế ế
*Unicode|Ệ ệ

Chinese

In Chinese pinyin ê represents IPA|/ɛ/. It corresponds to Unicode|ㄝ in zhuyin symbol.

Ukrainian

Ê is used in the system of Ukrainian transliteration as the letter Є.

Character mappings

Unicode character set contains 2 precomposed characters as Unicode|Ế / Unicode|ế, and Unicode|Ề / Unicode|ề, to represent the second and the fourth tone of ê. The first and the third tone of ê have to be represented by combining diacritical marks, like Unicode|ê̄ (Unicode|ê̄) and Unicode|ê̌ (Unicode|ê̌).
