"Eloise" is a pop song first released in 1968. It was sung by Barry Ryan, and written by his twin brother Paul Ryan. Running for a little over five minutes and 41 seconds, it featured strong orchestration, stronger vocals, and a brief slow movement. In that it is similar to the same year's hit "MacArthur Park". "Eloise" sold 3 million copies worldwide and reached number 2 in the UK's Record Retailer chart, but hit number 1 in the NME and Melody Maker charts.

In 1986 it was remade by The Damned, reaching number 3 in the UK charts.

The Damned version

On the back of the commercial success of the "Phantasmagoria" album, The Damned released the track as a stand-alone single, and were rewarded with their biggest hit as "Eloise" reached #3, spending 9 weeks on the UK singles chart, boosted by two different 12" releases. It was not included on any studio albums, but has since been issued on several Damned compilations.

MCA also issued the single in Germany, Australia, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa.

Other versions

"Eloise" was also covered by Howard Kaylan (he of The Turtles and Flo and Eddie) in his 2005 solo album, "Dust Bunnies."In 1968 it was recorded by French popstar Claude François and 1987 by Spanish artist Tino Casal. Most recently it has been covered by a Spanish symphonic metal group, Stravaganzza, though this last cover version is properly a cover of Tino Casal's Spanish translation.
Finnish singer Tapani Kansa did a version in Finnish. In return, later Finnish version was released as a single by Finnish band Se in 1979 and also performed by Finnish Leningrad Cowboys in their "Global Balalaika Show" on August 23rd 2003.
