Sergeant Carl Walter Weiss, who was killed in action during a battle on1 November 1942 with Japanese forces nearMatanikau River ,Guadalcanal , when he charged an enemymachine gun position and destroyed it with ahand grenade . For "his great personal valor, aggressiveness and fine spirit of self sacrifice," Sgt. Weiss was awarded theNavy Cross , posthumously."Weiss", a
John C. Butler class destroyer escort , was cancelled on5 June 1944 before completion, and her materials were scrapped. The name Weiss however, was concurrently reassigned to aRudderow class destroyer escort DE-719, which was re-designated to aCrosley class fast transport APD-135 on17 July 1944, and launched on17 February 1945 at theDefoe Shipbuilding Company inBay City, Michigan .References
